Nomura receives FSA warning

Liga tops Fluminense to win Copa Libertadores
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) Goalkeeper Jose Francisco Cevallos saved three penalties and Liga de Quito defeated Fluminense 3-1 in a shootout to become the first Ecuadorean club to win the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday. Liga clinched the title of Latin America's most important club competition despite a 3-1 loss in regulation, which tied the aggregate score at 5-5. It had won the first leg 4-2 last week in Quito and could have lifted the trophy with a draw or even a one-goal loss at Maracana stadium. The teams drew 0-0 in extra time.

TSE's longest losing streak in 54 years
The key Nikkei stock index fell Thursday for the 11th straight trading session to mark its longest losing streak in more than half a century on worries over the U.S. economy ahead of the release of key U.S. jobs data. The 225-issue Nikkei stock average lost 20.97 points, or 0.16 percent, from Wednesday to 13,265.40. The broader Topix index of all first-section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.13 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,298.02.

Bribed official wins leniency bid
OSAKA (Kyodo) A former land ministry official was handed a suspended two-year prison term Thursday by the Osaka District Court for receiving a bribe over bid-rigging in public works projects linked to a national park in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture. The court concluded Masahiko Takamatsu, 43, a former senior official at the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, accepted ¥1 million in bribes from a construction firm in return for leaking the target prices for public tender bids on two construction works at the park in 2004 and 2005.

LDP team seeks pension-funded SWF
A project team of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party called Thursday for establishing a ¥10 trillion sovereign wealth fund, using the nation's ¥150 trillion pension fund, to secure higher returns and increase pension payments. The group, led by former financial services minister Yuji Yamamoto, presented a blueprint for the Japanese SWF and maintained that professional asset managers should be hired by the fund, which would be a government-owned company. The team also said the entity should disband in five years if it fails to produce the expected results.

Bush vows to help resolve abductions, achieve CO è deal
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The United States will continue pressing North Korea to resolve the abductions dispute during the six-party talks aimed at disbanding Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal, President George W. Bush said Wednesday. Bush also hopes an agreement will be reached on a long-range goal for curbing greenhouse gas emissions at the Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido next week, he said in an interview with Japanese news organizations ahead of the summit.
